Performance features are loaded into ThinkPad R Series notebooks. Select models feature the Intel® Pentium® M processor. Large, bright XGA or SXGA+ TFT displays — up to 15" — and a choice of graphics are perfect for viewing presentations and demanding applications. Plus, you can get all-day battery life up to 9 hours6 using the system battery with the optional ThinkPad Ultrabay Slim Li Polymer Battery (select models).

Unique data protection and reliability features on ThinkPad R52, R51 and R50 models help safeguard your valuable data. The Active Protection System is an integrated, user-configurable motion sensor that continuously monitors your ThinkPad notebook and temporarily stops the hard drive to help prevent some hard drive crashes when a fall or similar event is detected. The ThinkPad HDD Shock Absorber provides impact protection from crashes that could occur when setting the notebook on a hard surface while in use.

High-performance wireless networking is easy with integrated IBM 11a/b/g Wi-Fi® wireless technology — available in select ThinkPad R Series notebooks10. This tri-mode technology provides the flexibility to connect in any Wi-Fi environment to help increase mobility and productivity. Choose from a variety of integrated Wi-Fi wireless solutions, or select a Wi-Fi wireless upgradable32 so you can experience the freedom of wireless networking when you're ready using one of the optional IBM Wi-Fi adapters.

Cisco compatibility is provided on select ThinkPad R52, R51 and R50 notebooks, which are rigorously tested by a Cisco Systems®-authorized test facility to verify they'll work with appropriate Cisco products. The Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) Program for wireless LAN devices provides proven compatibility with key security features of Cisco infrastructure products.
Optimized wireless performance features on ThinkPad R Series models with integrated Wi-Fi wireless or wireless upgradable34 functionality include the IBM UltraConnect™ antenna. It's built into the display cover for optimal signal reception24 — a combined design that supports IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g wireless technologies to help maximize coverage and performance for improved wireless LAN connectivity around the world.

Optimized for connectivity, select ThinkPad notebook models have up to five built-in communications capabilities: Wi-Fi wireless10, Bluetooth® technology, Ethernet, 56K3 modem and Infrared port. RJ-45 and RJ-11 ports are standard on all models.

High-speed Gigabit Ethernet technology is featured on select ThinkPad R Series notebooks. The Gigabit Ethernet standard delivers speeds up to 10 times faster30 than existing 10/100 Ethernet technology, helping to transfer information quickly and increase productivity.

Image compatibility for easier rollouts: The ThinkPad R52, R51, R50 and R40 preloaded software images are compatible with ThinkPad X31, T42, T41 and T40 models. This image compatibility makes for easier rollouts and helps save time and reduce cost by simplifying deployment and image management.

Rescue and Recovery™ software (preloaded on select models) provides a one-button recovery solution that lets you restore your previously saved system image including data, applications and operating system. It also includes a set of self recovery tools to help users diagnose, get help and recover from a software crash, even if the primary operating system will not boot.

The TCG-compliant Embedded Security Subsystem 2.0 (including IBM Client Security Software, available via download) lets you "lock" your data, helping to provide user authentication, data protection and more secure wired and wireless communications37. Available on select models, this hardware-and-software combination creates the most secure industry-standard PC, providing a level of security not available as a standard feature from any other manufacturer.

The ThinkLight™ keyboard light allows you to work in low-light conditions. Located on the top edge of the display, this tiny LED illuminates your keyboard to let you keep working. ThinkPad notebooks are the only notebook family with the ThinkLight keyboard light.

The ThinkPad UltraNav™ multipointing system, available on select models, was created with ease-of-use in mind. It combines the latest full-function TrackPoint® pointing device with an IBM-customized touch pad. A product of detailed research and analysis, this innovative tool lets you work the way you want. A choice of three TrackPoint cap designs allows you to further customize your ThinkPad notebook.

Distinctive design elements like the TrackPoint pointing device are what set IBM ThinkPad notebooks apart from the rest. This unique pointing device is standard on all of our notebooks’ legendary full-size keyboard. We now offer three types of TrackPoint cap choices which allow you to further customize your notebook: Classic Dome, Soft Dome or the Soft Rim.

The IBM Ultrabay™ is an integrated, easy-loading modular bay for fast-swapping of optional IBM Ultrabay optical and storage devices (select models). These options provide additional expansion capability so you can tailor your ThinkPad notebook to meet your computing needs. ThinkPad R52, R51 and R50 notebooks feature the Ultrabay Enhanced, which accepts both Ultrabay Enhanced and Ultrabay Slim devices. ThinkPad R52, R51 and R50 models also support hot-swapping, allowing you to swap one drive for another without having to reboot your system.
